Kayak Fishing Report – 24th Oct – ???

With some last min confirmations, the trip was on for this saturday morning. Ian is currently away in Rompin having a blast at the sailfish. We hope that he managed to achieve what he wanted to do in the first place which was to land a sailfish on a kayak!! …

Anyway today we had a new kaki, Alex that tagged along with us for the first time. After taking the secrecy oath of fisherman. We met up at the desired place at 545 to load up our ammo.. and headed straight to our launch point.

However, when we were about to start to unpack, our Captain “Merv” of the Mothership realised that he forgot his pump!! Therefore had to make u-turn back and leaving us to try the desired spot along without his awesome tracking and hunting prowess.

Once Alex and myself set up, we headed off and after about 20mins of paddle, we reach our first spot of the day.. Alex within 5mins had a take and brought up a nice Ang Cho!! Congrats matez!! 🙂

Soon after I was into 2 of them 🙂 This was within a span of 15mins!!! Not a bad day of fishing I would reckon. I even thought we had stumbled across a ang cho school!!

Soon after, I spotted the “Mothership” approaching us from the horizon. I therefore, paddled over to greet him. Just at the same moment, I witness a huge take on Merv trolling kit. Which was attached to a Rattin Rap again.. However it was not meant to be and the leader gave way after a short fight.

But not to be outdone, Merv was the first one into a Herring and landed it.

Along the way we lost quite a few Herrings.. I estimated a total of about 15+ bites!!! Some of the highlights of the day was that I landed my biggest Herring till date!!.. I once lost it… but now I found it !!!

Not to be outdone, Alex managed to get a herring as well :).. At one point it was almost a “Do Ray Me” situation where all of us had a take one after another..

Not to mentioned I also had my biggest chermin till date on this trip as well.. Weighing at almost 1.5kg!!

But all in all it was quite a trip..with a total of about 10 Herrings landed, 3 Ang Cho’s, 1 Catfish, 1 Chermin..However the lost bites or thrown hooks were just as many. I’ve estimated at least close to about 10+ takes between us or more that we lost..

At the end of the day, it was just great fun been out in the water with excellent kakis and loads of rod bending actions + fish flying action too!!!

Till next week.. I hope 🙂

Mathew da Chef – Sashimi Ang Cho

Today while fishing I managed to catch 2 nice table size Ang Cho.. The same fish that I made my sweet and sour fish with. While degutting the chermin that I’ve caught earlier.. I thought of having the ang cho as a sashimi dish!!

Out came the sharp knife and the filleting process begins. Once that was done, was the de-skinning process which was quite easy.. Slice them up into nice strips.. And we were all ready for my first sashimi attempt!! ..

One word for it..!! NICE!!!!!!!
My wife whom don’t even eat raw sushi was blown away by the taste of the fresh fish and she wanted more!!!

Mathew da Chef – Sweet and Sour Fish

Catch a fish for a man, you feed him for one day.. Teach him how to fish.. You feed him the whole life!!
I wonder who came up with such ingenious tag line..!!

Today, I’ve decided to make Sweet and Sour Fish for dinner out of the remaining Ang Cho which I had. ( Gave half of it to my grandma). Only halfway through the process I decided to take pictures along the way to show how I cooked it.. But I will try my best to explain my cooking process :P. Amateur cooking at it’s best.

1) I first fillet my Ang Cho removing it’s skin as well.. Then started slicing it up into strips or cubes.
2) Marinated them in light soya sauce and sprinkled pepper over the fish strips..
3) Evenly coat them with CORN FLOUR.. Yes Corn Flour .. not normal flour ya…

Now with the preparation all done and ready for cooking.. Pour in the oil into to wok.. heat it up till it’s all ready to fry 🙂 .. Now.. this is where the magic and fun begins 🙂

4) Drop the corn flour coated fish strips into the wok and let it cook.. Don’t try to stir it up straight away!! Just use the wok and shake it abit.. once you can see it move within the wok you know that the corn flour has not stick to the pan. Only then you use your spatula to stir it up till it’s lightly golden in colour.
First fry..

5) Okie then once you got them all cooked and out of the wok… Drop them back all in again for a short while till it’s proper golden in colour then take them out again. Why 2 times ??? Because… the 2nd time makes the corn flour coating even crispier!!! Try it 🙂 It’s the same method I use for my Sweet and Sour Pork…

6) Now we come to the sauce part.. We would need
– Tomato Ketchup
– Chilli Sauce
– Mixture of Corn Flour / Water and / Light Soya Sauce

7) The ratio of ketchup to chilli would be 3:1. Then when it’s boiling up, pour in the mixture of cornflour/water/lightsoya and stir.. As it boils the mixture, the corn flour would start to thicken up the sauce. If it gets too thick for your liking u can always add more water to it.. Basically cornflour mixture is one of the commonly use methods to achieve gravy like sauce for most chinese dishes.

8) Once the Sauce is done, you just need to put it into a bowl and drop the fish into it and serve up.. ( To add more colours and texture, you could add stuff like cucumber, green and red peppers.. pineapple.. Anything that you reckon you would like with it 🙂 As for this instance I had none of those as I decided to cook last min.

Yup that’s about it 🙂 Hope you enjoyed it… my own style of cooking shared for the first time LOL…
Maybe if time allows I’ll share my Mince Chicken Dumpling Soup recipe soon as well… Anyway here is my daughter having one fish dipper without sauce and how it looks like with sauce on my plate.

That’s all folks till next time 🙂

22th Oct 2009 – What a day….

Nope.. firstly this ain’t a fishing report. Just another day in my life that everything seems to go wrong. This morning as I dropped off Ashleigh to school, I was rejected by the school teachers as they suspect Ashleigh had HFM, based on one small blister on her hand.

“ARGH!! HFM again??” I thought to myself… if it happened then it would be the 3rd time she would have gotten it. So immediate arrangements had to be made. I’ve called up my trainer and she was kind enough to let me take urgent leave even though I was with the company for only less then 2 weeks.

Soon, Sharon, Ashleigh and myself were at the polyclinic. We managed to see the doctor quite fast even he could not ID, if it was HFM based on just one blister. Which he mentioned that could be caused even with just skin irritation. But based it was a suspected case of HFM… He placed Ashleigh in Home quanretinne for the next 3 days to monitor the suitation.

Sharon had to take 3 days off to look after Ashleigh.. Whereas I’ll be returning to work tomorrow. Nothing much happened today at home.. Just that during the evening, I’ve decided to make Sweet and Sour Fish out of my 1/2 Ang Cho left in the fridge!! Which made quite a nice meal out of it.

I’ll be posting a thread later on how I did up my sweet and sour fish 🙂

Oh well will cont. on my next blog 🙂

Kayak Fishing Report – 18th Oct – ???

Today I woke up late and had to meet Merv at the clubhouse instead.. Paiseh…
Once all set up.. The Mothership and RSS10.5 was all armed and ready to go..

MotherShip ” The Airis”
Mothership "The Airis"

RSS10.5 ” The Deckie”
RSS 10.5 "The Deckie"

Soon we were away paddling and paddling till we reach the new area to try.. At this point of time, Merv was trolling along the smallest Rapala Rattin Rap that I’ve seen in my life.. I reckon it was no bigger then 3cm. Guess what!! It caught him his first fish on lure in the sea in Singapore Waters.. A just right table size Guhood!!

Grunter aka Guhood on lure

Once that was landed and sorted.. we cont. on searching for the spot and found a nice drop off.. Mothership was anchored down and I clipped on to prevent myself from drifting fast. Soon I had a series of small taps.. thinking it was a small fish.. I was waiting for one more tap and I gave it a strike..

Oh!! That small fish managed to put a damn good bend on my 8-14lb Stage Rod.. Peeled out line on a almost full lock Shimano Cal200. Wow!!! Soon it was my first Ang Cho on my Kayak!!! Weighing at about 1.5kgs on the scales!!

My first Ang Cho on kayak!

Then it went pretty quiet throughout before a small grouper came along to pay a visit to an all enticing live prawn..

Small Grouper

Soon after, Merv had a huge take on his bait.. His rod was bending over like mad and we were both guessing what fish it was. Though we were joking it was a Catfish. But the fight was saying other wise.. But in the end.. It was TRUELY a catfish!!! Weighing close to 4kgs!!

In the end, the current was way too strong for us to stay along for long and we decided to head back..
Nice company.. alright fishing.. but hey at least it’s way better then work!!

Kayak Fishing Report – 17th Oct – Sembawang

Today was a special day as we had another few more kayak’ers joining us out fishing but later on in the day.
It started off quite slow but Merv managed to chance upon a school of Ang Cho and landed 2 in a row.. Before he landed another 2 more groupers..

Soon it went quite for all of us. I then noticed Merv was moving to another spot and I said to Ian jokingly ” Hey we better follow the mother ship.. he seems abit dodgy!!!” At this point I decided to slowly paddle and drift my prawn. Just as I was closing in to the mothership, I felt an all familiar tap at the line.. and soon I was into a Chermin!!

Ian followed suit and was soon rewarded with a handsome 1kg+ Tiger Grouper!!! Then it went quite again with the current picking up like no tomorrow. We then met up with the new convoy of kayaks before carrying on fishing..

I was lucky to hit into another chermin just before I had to leave to send my wife to work. Man the paddling back was a killer as I was going against the current which took me at least 45mins to hit back shore!!
Over all it was a nice and relaxing day out with the guys.. with some extra fishes that brought life to the trip.

just a short 1min clip 😛

What’s in the Sky??

Wow …
I stumbled across this link in the Yahoo. It mentions about a Halo Cloud that was spotted off Moscow..
Amazingly there was youtube video to it. Think it was a Hoax, I decided to check the youtube out but it sure looks 100% real to me mate!!
